There is so much unavoidable pain in life; why create unnecessary pain? It is possible, so listen carefully! I was fortunate to be able to see Andy Stanley’s Love, Sex. and Dating series during April and May at Athens Church. I wanted to share my take-aways from the​.

There are some myths out there that people assume to be gospel about dating, especially among Christians. Christian culture is like any other in that we develop truisms that we accept without verifying. There are ” Christian dating ” ideas floating around that have little or nothing to do with the Bible. Most are well intended and contain a nugget of truth. Some are flat-out wrong. Dating is hard enough without sifting through all this erroneous information, so let’s debunk some myths around Christian dating.

There are plenty of them, but let’s focus on what I believe are the top five myths that make dating harder for Christian singles. Good luck finding this one in the Bible.

But it can also be joyful and Christ honouring. Doing it right is flipping hard and requires some serious dedication. In fact, I feel able to talk and write about this topic precisely because I have got it wrong so many times and God has consistently shown me grace and turned my mistakes into good. He points me to Christ, shares wisdom, prays for and with me, encourages me when I am feeling doubtful and fights with me to hold firm to my faith and the values we share.

This is not true. Christian relationships are messy, complicated and sometimes they break down.

We are looking at the dysfunctional relationships within the book of Genesis and this story is a great picture of what happens when we lie in the context of family. There is salvation that can come through our worst mistakes and disasters. When it comes to overcoming lies, we need to not fear the truth, but instead fear God. God did not cause Rebecca and Jacob to lie, that was a result of their selfishness and lack of wisdom. God saves us, in spite of us, because that is what he does.

We must remember that happiness is not found in relationships with other people – whether spouses or friends. The deep void that we need to fill in our hearts is the desire for God.
